Shenzhen People's Hospital was founded in 1946, formerly known as Bao'an County Health Center. After liberation, it was renamed Bao'an County People's Hospital. Because Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau residents call hospitalization 'staying for medical treatment,' as the only medical institution with an inpatient department in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone at that time, the hospital was commonly called 'Medical Stay Department' by residents, which has become synonymous with Shenzhen People's Hospital and is still used today. In 1979, with the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, it was renamed Shenzhen People's Hospital. In 1994, it was rated as Shenzhen's first 'tertiary Grade A' hospital. In 1996, it was approved by the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office to become the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University School of Medicine. In 2005, it was upgraded to the Second Clinical Medical College of Jinan University. It has now developed into Shenzhen's largest modern comprehensive hospital with complete functions, advanced equipment, reasonable talent structure, strong technical capabilities, integrating medical treatment, research, teaching, resident physician standardized training, and healthcare. The hospital covers an area of 124,914.52 square meters with 2,300 authorized beds and over 2,500 open beds. It has over 4,000 employees, including 870 with senior qualifications and 741 with intermediate qualifications; 65.0% of physicians have graduate degrees or above; 13 doctoral supervisors and 85 master's supervisors. In 2017, there were 101,000 discharged patients and 3.25 million outpatient visits. The hospital has 16 Guangdong Provincial clinical key disciplines including respiratory and critical care medicine, nephrology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, thoracic surgery, stomatology, anesthesiology, gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology, emergency medicine, pathology, laboratory medicine, clinical nursing, and medical imaging.
