Shenzhen Kangning Hospital was established in 1984, formerly known as Shenzhen Mental Hospital. Through over 20 years of development and construction, adhering to the principle of "patient-centered" and the concept of "people-oriented mental health," it has become a municipal mental health specialty hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, research, and prevention. Shenzhen Kangning Hospital is a National Grade II Class A hospital, one of Guangdong Province's hundred civilized hospitals, and a designated hospital for the Ministry of Health's "Healthy Home" program. It is a designated medical unit of Shenzhen Social Security Bureau and the affiliated unit of Shenzhen Mental Health Association and Shenzhen Psychological Crisis Intervention Center. It is also a teaching hospital (base) for Jinan University Medical College, Wannan Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Guangdong Medical College, and an internship base for Shenzhen University Normal College. Shenzhen Mental Health Center operates jointly with Shenzhen Kangning Hospital, and Shenzhen Mental Health Research Institute is located here. Currently, the hospital has 200 approved beds (actually 310 open beds), expandable to 300 beds after expansion. It has over 400 staff members, with 266 on-staff personnel including 8 doctors, 15 masters, 82 undergraduates, 16 senior professionals, 35 associate senior professionals, 69 intermediate professionals, and 115 junior professionals (as of June 30, 2008). The hospital has departments including general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, child and adolescent psychology, child rehabilitation education, psychological crisis intervention center, psychological training center, psychological counseling, sexual medicine, psychological assessment center, forensic psychiatry, and traditional Chinese medicine. The inpatient department has one psychotherapy ward and four psychiatric wards, implementing graded open management for inpatients. As the city's mental health prevention and treatment institution, the Municipal Mental Health Center undertakes the city's mental health prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation guidance work. A four-level mental health prevention network covering the city's six districts with Kangning Hospital as the core has been initially established. Currently, mental illness prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation work has been incorporated into the city's public health system; the Shenzhen Mental Health Information Management System has been established, achieving computerized management of the city's mental patients. The Mental Health Research Institute has research laboratories in clinical psychiatry, clinical psychology, social psychiatry, child mental health, biological psychiatry, and electrophysiology, and is at the national advanced level in research fields such as psychopharmacology and molecular genetics of affective disorders. The Forensic Psychiatric Judicial Appraisal Institute provides services to society including psychiatric judicial appraisal and disability appraisal, possessing advanced equipment such as ERP and research achievements such as "Two-Item Required Digital Memory Test." The hospital undertakes various training tasks for psychological crisis intervention throughout the city and is the only specialized institution in the city approved by the Municipal Labor and Social Security Bureau Training Department and Guangdong Provincial Labor Department Employment Training Department to conduct psychological counselor training in Shenzhen. As Shenzhen's psychological counselor training base, it has trained a large number of psychological counselors for society over the years. The hospital undertakes multiple provincial and municipal research projects annually, while conducting horizontal research cooperation with other hospitals and university research institutes; research achievements have won multiple Shenzhen Science and Technology Progress Awards, and hundreds of academic papers have been published in domestic and foreign journals and provincial-level or above journals. Extensive academic exchanges with domestic and foreign research institutions have greatly promoted the improvement of the hospital's medical technology and research level. Shenzhen Kangning Hospital undertakes clinical internship and teaching tasks for medical college undergraduates, psychology department students, nursing undergraduates, and visiting students from various places. It frequently hosts national, provincial, and municipal continuing education projects or is commissioned to co-organize international academic conferences.
