Shanghai Second People's Hospital, originally named "Shanghai Hospital," was founded in 1904 as the first comprehensive hospital combining traditional Chinese and Western medicine established by Chinese people themselves. It has developed into a comprehensive hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, and research. The hospital covers 21.8 acres with 482 beds and 908 staff members, including 681 professional technical personnel. It has 10 first-level clinical disciplines and 15 second-level clinical disciplines, with 8 medical technology departments. The hospital handles over 500,000 annual outpatient visits and over 5,000 inpatient admissions. Spinal surgery and stroke specialty have become municipal characteristic disciplines. The hospital has been rated as "Shanghai Civilized Unit" three consecutive times since 1993, was rated as one of ten national "Demonstration Hospitals" in 1996, "National Top 100 Hospitals" in 1999, and "National Outstanding Collective of Health System" in 2000.
