The predecessor of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, "Bethel Hospital," was founded in 1920. It was renamed Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital in 1952 and officially became Shanghai Second Medical University Affiliated Ninth People's Hospital in 1964. In 2005, Shanghai Second Medical University officially merged with Shanghai Jiaotong University, and the Ninth Hospital was renamed Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In November 2014, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Shanghai Third People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (formerly Baogang Hospital, a tertiary comprehensive hospital) integrated resources, with south and north campuses, unified layout, and unified management. In October 2015, the Shanghai Municipal Institutional Establishment Commission approved the Municipal Education Commission's agreement for Shanghai Third People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, to be wholly merged into Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The Ninth Hospital is a government-sponsored non-profit tertiary Grade-A comprehensive hospital approved and registered by the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. The hospital's southern campus is located in Huangpu District in Shanghai's central urban area (No. 639 Zhizaoju Road), and the northern campus is located in the Baosong area of Shanghai's northern wing (No. 280 Mohe Road). At the same time, the hospital has the Ninth Hospital Pudong Science and Education Park (No. 115 Jinzun Road), Ninth Hospital Pudong Branch (No. 166 Yanzhen Road), and Gaoke Oral Medical Cosmetic Clinic (No. 350 Yanqiao Road) in the Youyou area of Pudong New District, Hongmei Oral Medical Cosmetic Clinic (No. 3310 Hongmei Road) in Xuhui District, and Dagu Oral Medical Cosmetic Clinic (No. 388 Dagu Road) in Jing'an District. The hospital undertakes basic medical services in the city's regional areas, mainly engaged in the treatment of acute critical illnesses and difficult diseases. It is also a designated hospital for Shanghai's 120 emergency services and a designated hospital for Shanghai's oral cadre healthcare.
