Shanghai First People's Hospital (Shanghai General Hospital) was founded on March 1, 1864, and is one of the earliest established comprehensive century-old hospitals in the country. It was renamed Gongjii Hospital in 1877, named Shanghai Red Cross Hospital in 1981, and became the first national Grade III Class A comprehensive hospital in 1992. In 2002, it was crowned Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated First People's Hospital. In 2006, it actively promoted the equalization of quality medical resources and took the lead in establishing a branch in Songjiang District, creating a new pattern of "one hospital, two locations, differentiated development." It has repeatedly won honors such as National Top 100 Hospitals, National Health System Advanced Unit, and National Spiritual Civilization Construction Advanced Unit. The hospital currently has northern (No. 85/86 Wujin Road, Hongkou District) and southern (No. 650 Xinsongjiang Road, Songjiang District) locations, covering approximately 295,000 square meters. In 2018, the hospital had 3,584 staff members, 1,820 approved beds, and 68 tertiary clinical disciplines and medical technology disciplines in both north and south locations. In 2018, the hospital treated 4.072 million outpatient and emergency patients; 121,000 discharged patients; 92,100 inpatient surgeries; medical business income of 4.14 billion yuan; drug proportion 29.9%, total drug and consumables proportion less than 50%. Medical service structure transformation maintains high standards and steady growth in quality and efficiency. Under the guidance of the total quality management system, the hospital is focusing on building specialized disease diagnosis and treatment centers with difficult and critical diseases and acute critical illness treatment as the core. Among the 54 representative diseases of concern to Shenkang in 2018, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation ranked first in the city, cataract with intraocular lens implantation, vitreoretinal surgery, and laryngeal malignant tumors ranked second in the city, with a total of 11 diseases ranking in the top three.
