The Third Affiliated Hospital of Second Military Medical University (Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Research Institute) was developed under the leadership of Professor Wu Mengchao, pioneer of China's hepatobiliary surgery, renowned hepatobiliary surgery expert, and Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, starting from the establishment of a three-person hepatobiliary surgery group in 1956. Through over 40 years of self-reliance, hard work, striving for excellence, and climbing peaks, it has developed from a small group into the only specialty hospital in China integrating hospital and institute functions for medical treatment, teaching, and research, becoming a national key discipline, national continuing medical education base, PLA Hepatobiliary Surgery Specialty Center, PLA Hepatobiliary Surgery Research Institute, PLA Key Research Institute, military "key among keys" construction discipline, Shanghai medical leading specialty key discipline, and Shanghai clinical medical center. In May 1993, former General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Jiang Zemin personally inscribed the hospital and institute names. In December 1996, it was approved by the General Logistics Department as a "tertiary Grade-A" specialty hospital, possessing 660 beds and advanced equipment. Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital has long adhered to combining medical treatment, teaching, and research, achieving domestic leading levels in early diagnosis and treatment of primary liver cancer, comprehensive treatment of intermediate and advanced liver cancer, anti-recurrence treatment after primary liver cancer surgery, tumor immunotherapy and interventional therapy, surgical treatment of complex biliary diseases, endoscopic treatment of hepatobiliary diseases, and liver transplantation. It not only employs traditional surgical treatment methods but also adopts microwave methods, radiofrequency methods, argon-helium knife methods, laser photosensitization technology, intrahepatic tumor alcohol injection therapy, and femoral artery to hepatic artery catheterization plus embolization therapy.
