The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (formerly Guangzhou Second People's Hospital) was founded in 1899, originally as the Guangdong Women's Medical School and affiliated clinic established by the American Presbyterian Church, later becoming Hackett Medical College for Women. It is a comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital in Guangzhou. The hospital houses the well-equipped Guangzhou Maternal and Child Research Institute and Guangzhou Critical Pregnant Women Rescue Center. It is a National Health System Advanced Unit, National Baby-Friendly Hospital, Provincial Hundred Civilized Hospitals, and Guangzhou Civilized Hospital. In May 2006, Guangzhou Second People's Hospital was renamed the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, and the Third Clinical Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established at year-end. The hospital is located in Liwan District, Guangzhou, adjacent to the scenic Liwan Lake, covering 28,385 square meters with approximately 100,000 square meters of medical building area. Currently employing nearly 1,300 health technical personnel at all levels, including 177 with associate senior or above titles, 45 master's supervisors, 2 doctoral supervisors, 209 doctors and masters, and 1 enjoying State Council special allowances. Annual outpatient visits reach 1 million, with 1,000 authorized beds and over 25,000 annual inpatient admissions. Equipped with advanced medical equipment including MRI, spiral CT, ECT, DSA, CR, DR, C-arm X-ray, China's first third-generation electromagnetic navigation system, color cardiac and abdominal ultrasound, real-time 3D color ultrasound, endometrial microwave therapy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, laparoscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, central cardiac monitoring system, fully automatic biochemical analyzer, and modern intravenous preparation center, totaling over 230 million yuan, fully meeting modern clinical diagnosis, treatment, and medical research development needs. Currently, the hospital has relatively complete professional departments, with 34 clinical departments and 12 medical technology departments, opening over 100 specialty clinics and over 150 expert clinics. Obstetrics and gynecology is a Guangdong Provincial Health Department characteristic specialty. The early Hackett Hospital enjoyed high reputation in South China for its characteristics, receiving attention from all sectors of society. The Guangzhou Maternal and Child Research Institute within the hospital mainly engages in critical pregnant women clinical rescue and perinatal medicine, reproduction and genetics, gynecological tumors, and prenatal diagnosis work, forming four major technical characteristics: comprehensive critical pregnant women rescue, human assisted reproduction, gynecological tumor diagnosis and treatment, gynecological laparoscopy and pelvic floor diagnosis and treatment, reaching domestic leading levels. It is one of the two earliest hospitals in Guangzhou approved by the Ministry of Health to conduct human assisted reproductive technology. The Forensic Evidence Judicial Appraisal Institute was established in 2004, approved by the Ministry of Justice with forensic evidence appraisal qualifications, with appraisal results having legal effect, providing services to society as a judicial appraisal institution. The hospital's liver transplantation technology received Grade A qualification from Guangdong Medical Association, kidney transplantation technology approved by the Ministry of Health, successfully conducting ovarian transplantation, kidney transplantation, liver transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, corneal transplantation, heart transplantation, lung transplantation, and other internationally leading high-difficulty surgeries. The hospital has always committed to characteristic specialty construction. Obstetrics, gynecology, orthopedics, and reproductive medicine are the hospital's key disciplines; neonatology, cardiovascular medicine, and organ transplantation are the hospital's key specialties.
