Beijing Huaxin Hospital, also known as the First Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University, was originally affiliated with the Ministry of Information Industry. On April 10, 2003, it was transferred to the Ministry of Education and managed by Tsinghua University. It is a first-class public institution legal person unit under the leadership of Tsinghua University. The hospital's predecessor was the staff hospital directly under the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building (later the Ministry of Electronics, Ministry of Electronic Industry, Ministry of Information Industry), founded in February 1959, with names including 401 Hospital and Beijing Jiuxianqiao Hospital. During the 2003 SARS outbreak, the hospital was honorably designated as a "Beijing Designated Hospital for Treating Atypical Pneumonia." Under the care of Beijing Municipality, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Information Industry, and under the strong leadership of the Tsinghua University Party Committee and administration, the hospital's SARS Command and Temporary Party Working Committee united and led all hospital staff to practice the important thought of "Three Represents" with actual actions of saving lives and healing the wounded, working selflessly and dutifully, treating a total of 137 SARS patients, achieving a cure rate of over 90% and "zero infection" among medical staff. The hospital is a comprehensive hospital with specialty characteristics, with 3 medical centers at the domestic leading level including the Heart Center and Urology Medical Center (Nephrology), 45 clinical departments such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and pediatrics, and medical technology departments such as laboratory, radiology and imaging, and pharmacy, as well as 4 research institutes. The hospital has over 1,070 employees (including over 110 contract employees), including over 850 medical personnel, over 40 chief physicians (11 doctoral supervisors, over 20 enjoying government special allowances), over 100 associate chief physicians and other associate senior title experts, and over 200 intermediate title medical staff and professional technical personnel. As of early 2006, the hospital has 500 open beds with an average utilization rate of nearly 90%; since January 2005, the average daily outpatient and emergency volume has been over 1,700 people.
